Acute Sinusitis

Symptoms

Thick yellow or green mucus from the nose
Nasal blockage or congestion
Feeling pain when touching and noticing swelling and pressure around the eyes, cheeks or forehead area, more when bending over
ear pressure
headache
Toothache
Altered sense of smell
coughing
Bad breath
Fatigue
Fever

Causes

In most cases, sinusitis is caused by the common cold, which is a viral infection.  Sometimes infection is caused by bacteria.

Risk factors

Hay fever or another allergic condition
The common cold
Nasal passage abnormalities such as a deviated nasal septum, nasal polyps, or tumors
Certain medical conditions such as cystic fibrosis or an immune system disorder
Exposure to smoke, either from direct smoking or from exposure to secondhand smoke

Complications

Chronic sinusitis
Meningitis
Other infections Uncommonly, the infection can spread to the bones or skin
Vision problems: If the infection spreads to the pupil of the eye, it may cause decreased vision, or even blindness

Prevention

Avoid upper respiratory infection, try to stay away from people who have colds or any other infection.  And wash your hands frequently with soap and water
Sensitivity control
Avoid cigarette smoke and polluted air
Use a humidifier.  If the air in your house is dry

Diagnosis

The doctor will check for pain when touching your nose and face and may examine the inside of your nose.  A doctor can usually diagnose the condition based on a physical examination.
However, there are other ways:
Endoscopy
• X-rays
Examination of samples of secretions
Sensitivity selection

Treatment

Most cases of acute sinusitis get better on their own.  Usually, only personal care is needed to relieve symptoms.

Treatments to relieve symptoms:
A saline nasal spray
Nasal steroid spray
Decongestants
Antibiotics if caused by bacteria
