Colon Cleansing

Colon cleansing is often used in preparation for medical procedures such as a colonoscopy.  However, some alternative medicine practitioners offer colon cleansing for other purposes, such as detoxification.

During colon cleansing, large amounts of water are pumped through the colon, sometimes with other substances such as herbal extracts or coffee.  This is done through a tube inserted into the rectum

Alleged benefits

Colon-cleansing advocates believe that toxins in the intestines can cause a wide variety of health problems, such as arthritis and high blood pressure.

They also believe that cleaning the colon improves health by removing toxins, stimulating energy and increasing the efficiency of the immune system.  However, there is no scientific evidence that colon cleansing leads to these effects or is beneficial at all.
